When Zemeckis felt they weren’t getting what they wanted (a more comical Marty) out of Stoltz they had already shot 5 weeks worth of film; somehow managing to convince the studio to let them reshoot all of that with Michael J Fox instead. Everyone was very upset to see Stoltz leave the production. Back to the Future grossed $350,000,000 worldwide a year after it’s release.
They certainly got lucky.
